That Entertainment Podcast - Brisbane Edition
It’s been a rough 12 months for live theatre around the world because of Covid 19. But in Queensland – it’s back! With Come From Away opening at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC on March 28, 2021.
Come From Away tells the story of the planes that were diverted from around the world to a tiny Canadian town when Sept 11 happened. 7000 displaced passengers made the town of Gander (population 10,000) their home for a number of days.
A few days before opening night, Louise Poole was invited backstage to chat to Resident Director & Choreographer Liam Mcilwain about Come From Away…
You may also enjoy our interview with Sarah Morrison, who stars in the show!

This is what anxiety looks like. I once was having a conversation about mental health with someone I'd only just met and I told them that I experience anxiety. They said to me: 'You don't look like someone who struggles with mental health'. There was no intentional malice in that, just an unintentional lack of awareness and education. What do YOU think anxiety and/or depression look like? Portrayals in movies or tv will often make it seem like if you struggle with mental health you are either 'crazy' or crying, paralyzed sadness, and unable to function - but that's not true. People who struggle with anxiety look like me, and they look like your colleagues, and they look like your friends. Sometimes we hide it from people in our lives, sometimes we get overwhelmed, sometimes we experience anxiety and panic attacks, sometimes we cancel plans or don't reach out to people we care about because we feel like we wouldn't be fun to be around. Mental health is something that manifests differently for everyone. For example, for me, I can feel confident speaking in front of thousands of people, but struggle with 10 people at a party. My point on this R U OK day, is to tell you to check in with people you care about, even if you think they LOOK fine, every day. Any day. Encourage open dialogue and non judgemental conversations about mental health everyday, not just on R U OK day. Help normalize the topic. Your sphere of influence is greater than you imagine and you never know who you might help. 💛 [Louise is wearing a blue sequin dress, standing in front on a blue sky mural. Life hack: When heading into a darkened tunnel, always wear a top so bright it can light the way💥 Also handy for disorientating and distracting any trolls you find under bridges. ______ [Louise is wearing a neon pink cold shoulder jumper and knee length denim skirt. With black flat shoes. She has her hands in her pocket and is standing in front of a darkened tunnel with artwork on the sides] Image manipulation disclosure: retouch was used to clean up some of the background graffiti etc. Body has not been altered in any way.
Isn't it amazing when you find some place special for the first time? I was going through my camera roll and found the photos we snapped the day we went to the Botanic Gardens at Mt Tamborine. Most of the gardens were what you would expect but this walkway was filled with the most amazing autumnal trees and leaves. It's not the kind of sight you usually see in QLD. I felt like I should be sipping a pumpkin spice latte (you also don't find those in QLD😄) plus I got to play in the leaves with the brush turkey. What places have you stumbled onto and fallen in love with? ____ Pants @pqcollection_ Top @bestandless Cardi - stolen from photographer Shoes @kmartaus [Louise wearing navy pants, a white tshirt and a long navy cardigan with rusty red shoes. The irony that this cat jumper is completely covered in cat hair is not lost on me. It's actually probably a good thing social media doesn't yet come with smell, because I bet I lowkey smell like cat all the time and I just don't notice it😆 Earlier today they made me hand feed them one of those squeezy treat tubes. They do their delicate little licks while I stand there for 5 minutes awkwardly holding fish mush in a packet. 😺 I'm sure I'm not the only one who is a slave to their pets tho - Who's the boss in your house? ---- [Louise is leaning up against a blue wall. She is wearing a yellow and blue hoodie with the top half of a cats face in black print on the front.]
Those Friday feels... See Also: Those Mon, Tues, Weds, Thurs, Sunday night & lockdown feels. How was your week? I've been busy today behind the scenes starting preproduction on a podcast that I've wanted to create for the longest time, but wasn't yet emotionally ready for. Well, now I think I am. The conversations that are always the most important to us are the hardest ones to have aren't they? ______ Dress @eloquii [Louise lounges on a blue and green pool type chair, in a park. Giving you my best fully vaxxed vibes😎 I genuinely never thought I'd be this relieved to be immunised.I mean, I had a milestone birthday like 2 weeks ago and honestly I'm more excited to have had the vaccine on Thursday 😆 I managed to escape the side effects for my first dose but the second had me spend most of the weekend in bed. A trade I would make every single time, instead of covid. How was your weekend? _____ [Louise is wearing a black off shoulder top and rainbow mesh skirt and standing in front of a red sequin wall.]
Feeling like I've got some BDE today. It's a recent philosophy. Whenever I begin to hesitate to put myself or my ideas out there, I ask myself: 'What would a mediocre, straight cis white alpha douche man do?' Because if there's one thing that those men have, it's the audacity. And then I do it. I'm out there this week cold pitching our ideas to people that didn't ask for them, and you know what - the answer hasn't been no. So, please have the audacity to back yourself. ____ Outfit: Skirt @littlepartydress Jumper @sheinofficial Shoes @kmartaus BDE - I'm gonna make you google it. Put the family filter on😂 [Louise is wearing a rainbow skirt, white boots and cream jumper with a rainbow stripe in the middle. She has her arms above her head and the photo is taken from a low angle. She is standing in front of a bird mural on a toilet block - because audacity.] Photo taken before lockdown *yes, it's not all men, but you know the kind I mean
Popping in to say you're allowed to not be productive during a lockdown. You don't have to use this time to 'better yourself' or start/finish projects. There's already enough anxiety around lockdown, give yourself permission to let go of all the 'should' expectations you might be placing on yourself. Of course, if you feel inspired, or it brings you joy then that's a different story... Take care of your mental health first. _____ [Louise is popping her head through a hole in a pink and purple wall with a neon circle cut out.] Photo taken before lockdown.
When lockdown gives you the time to go through all the content on your phone and work out what you've missed posting the last few weeks because you haven't felt up to it, and then once you stop posting it's hard to get back into the swing of it and not judge yourself for not posting more and thinking of all those videos you have to make and edit and all the people you might be letting down... Or is that just me?!?🥴 How are you spending your lockdown Sunday? ____ [Louise is dressed wearing a pastel rainbow stripe jumpsuit, yellow belt, and rainbow cardigan. Sooooo.... Anyone got any good news today?😷 🎙@welcomechangeandy and I recorded our last interview for our upcoming mental wellness series this afternoon (There's 31 all up) and now we get to edit everything together. All going well, the release shouldn't be too far away and it sounds like we're going need it! We celebrated getting out the cheese and crackers, while in our lounge wear, at home. So just like every other day 😆 Who else has something that's better news than the actual news?⬇️ _______ Outfit: Dress @shein_au [Louise is wearing a rainbow mask, rainbow dress, rainbow hair, and an expression of 'you shitting me?']
Tell me something good that happened to you today! I feel like we could all do with some rainbows and sunshine this week so share in the comments and let's celebrate the wins!
